High School (9th - 12th graders): High school will have a scrimmage on October 17 against one or more teams from the Leverage League. And they will compete in the California Cup in Huntington Beach on October 31 & November 1. If you are planning on playing Dragons travel teams or any type of elite play in the Winter, the box program is the best way to get prepared for the season. Registration closes on 8/24 and the team will be limited to 15 players. SEE BELOW FOR ADDITIONAL REGISTRATION INFO.

REGISTRATION - There are two registrations for the competition portion of the box program:

U11/U13 - This covers the league fees, California Cup, as well as coaching fees for game weekends. Cost is $235. Click HERE to register.

U15/HS - This covers the California Cup, scrimmage, as well as coaching fees for game weekends. Cost is $100. Click HERE to register.

A quick word of clarification on the cost of box lacrosse. Box lacrosse is more expensive than field lacrosse because there are between 25% to 30% fewer players on a team, depending on how organizations manage their teams. So as a result, a box program is about 25% to 30% more expensive than a field lacrosse program.

California Cup Info - Those of you that played in this tournament last year will remember that the event is held at The Rinks in Huntington Beach, which is a great facility. This year, the following organizations have already confirmed participation: SurfDawgs, Team West Coast, Waves and Encore. Teams that are likely to participate include Booth Indians, Team NorCal, Battle Born Box Lacrosse, Buku and Mad Lax. More info is on the California Cup Website.

2014/15 TRYOUTS & ASSESSMENTS

HS

The scope and intent of this year’s tryouts & assessments are different than last year. A year ago we were just starting up Dragons and were still learning how to run things. That meant we were only able to field 5 travel teams and we had to turn many families away. Since that time we have had close to 200 players exposed to our training and we’ve received a lot of positive feedback. Additionally, for the last 8 weeks we’ve been able to run a number of fall ball programs with players new to Dragons, with great results.

So at this year’s tryouts & assessments we are not just looking to fill slots on a travel team. We are also looking to create a more integrated organization that will be able to offer everything from entry level classes (Lacrosse 101), to recreational and travel teams. We believe it is important for us to create a ladder system in which players can enter the program at any skill level and progress over time, and start playing at higher and higher levels.

Last year we had to turn away many talented players simply because we didn’t have enough spots. But those players would have benefited from our training system. We don’t want that to happen again so at this year’s tryouts & assessments we are taking a different approach. Players will be evaluated via an assessment sheet and then categorized as either “travel” or “recreational”.

Travel teams will have rosters limited to a maximum of 22 players. They will play the following 3 tournaments in the Winter:

Vegas - December 6 & 7

Del Mar - January 2 - 4

Sandstorm  - January 17 - 18

Recreational teams will be coached by the same coaches as the travel teams and use the same curriculum. These are not “B” teams, they are development teams. They will have access to the same resources, and they are simply part of a ladder system that allows players to develop over time. Our goal is to have  a majority of the players on a recreational team move up to the travel team level by the summer. Recreational teams will play in the West LA league and participate in one tournament this winter:

Goleta - January 24 & 25

Registration Process: Online registration is mandatory and there is a nominal $20 participation charge. On the day of the tryout you will need to check in so we can verify attendance and set up the assessment sheets. Your player will receive a numbered pinnie for better identification. Pinnies need to be returned at the conclusion of the session. Check in opens an hour prior to the session but you do not need to be there at that time. We just want to leave ourselves enough time to get all the paperwork done prior to the start of the session so we don’t lose any of the valuable field time. You can register HERE.

Thanks for your interest in the Santa Monica Dragons and we hope to see you on the field soon.
