SUMMER TRAVEL

INTRODUCTION

Since we started Dragons 5 years ago we have gained a lot of experience on how to get the most out of the sport of lacrosse for our athletes. We have taken young boys from 4th grade all the way to high school, with many making Varsity at their respective schools as freshmen. We have transitioned more players from the youth ranks into Loyola (#1 in LA) and Harvard Westlake (#3 in LA) than anyone else. And we helped get our entire active class of 2018 players recruited to play in college. Congratulations boys and good luck in the next phase of your life!

The experience we’ve gained since our early years allows us to create programs that provide players a path from youth lacrosse to the college ranks. And as we enter the Fall/Winter season, we want to provide parents with a more comprehensive overview of the year ahead, rather than just tryouts and a schedule for the upcoming season. We believe that having an overview makes it much easier for parents and players to make decisions.

At the core of all the success we have had at developing young boys into outstanding young men, athletes and lacrosse players, is a training program we believe to be the best in town. Over the years we have held specialty clinics with Zach Greer (Duke, MLL, NLL), Brendan Fowler (Duke, MLL, NLL), Greg Gurenlian (Penn State, MLL, Team USA) and Kyle Harrison (Hopkins, MLL, Team USA). All of these clinics were set up for our players specifically. We weren’t just a feeder into an existing session. And we are the only program in LA with an official relationship with Lacrosse Masters, the premier Prospect Camp series in the nation. We also have a new partnership with MadLax that provides our players with preferred access to guest play opportunities on the East Coast for all age levels, as well as spots on the MadLax National Team that competes in exclusive National Lacrosse Federation, the most competitive club tournament series in the nation.

But at the core of it all is our day-to-day training. We typically offer more training time than other programs in a given season and we have more coaches and more experience on the field. In fact for the last year we’ve been overstaffing our practices to make sure coaches are rotated to get to know all our players and so they coach at the appropriate levels. This has led to 3, sometimes 4 coaches at a single team practice. We raised the bar years ago when we introduced an all-professional coaching staff in our area, and in the last two years have managed to keep the quality and consistency very high. We have a core roster of 14 coaches and expand to over 20 during peak season. Our coaches are knowledgable, experienced, they are passionate about lacrosse and love teaching kids. Maybe most importantly, our coaches bring an infectious and positive energy to the field that makes lacrosse and learning fun. And they know our players. If you’ve played high school with us, then you will also know that our coaches frequently suit up and jump into drills with our players. And of course they are not shy to help our players in the recruiting process. Click HERE to read about our coaches.

WELCOME TO THE 2018 WINTER SEASON

This year we are running things a little differently in an effort to:

  • Offer a more personalized approach
  • Maximize training benefits
  • Make sure we have rosters optimized for each tournament
  • Allow families more control over costs

The primary change is that we are separating training and tournaments this season.

ORIENTATION MEETING

We will host an orientation meeting on Thursday, October 18th at the Main Library in Santa Monica in the Community Room (click for details) from 7:30-8:30pm.

PROGRAM ELEMENTS

Below is an overview of the program elements. A detailed description follows below:

  1. Training Membership (mandatory)
  2. Team Tournaments
  3. Advanced Player Pre-Season Clinics
  4. Advanced Player Post-Season Clinics

The Training Membership is required. The others are opt-in to allow families scheduling and budgeting flexibility.

ROSTERS

This winter rosters will be built differently than in the past. Once tournament registration closes, we will select teams based on the optimal fit and most competitive roster. There will be no set format. For example, if you are a player in 6th grade, we could have you on a single grade team, a 5/6 team or a 6/7 team. We feel that this approach will create the healthiest and most competitive teams because families are making a commitment to a specific date, and because not all tournaments run the same division structures. Our approach allows us to optimize for the benefit of our players and families. Below are some basic guidelines regarding the rosters:

  • You must have a Training Membership to play tournaments.
  • You can have a Training Membership and not play tournaments.
  • Each tournament roster will capped at 18-20 to maximize playing time.
  • You can choose to play as few as 1 and as many as 5 tournaments.
  • We will only attend those tournaments at which we have committed rosters.

TRAINING MEMBERSHIP

The Training Membership consists of the following elements:

  • Positional
  • Team Practices
  • Pick Up Games - Beach & Field
  • Box
  • Speed & Agility

Positional: Positional training is small-group training by position that takes place either as a stand-alone clinic, or as part of a Team Practice. We basically split players up by position and teach them the skills and lacrosse IQ required to excel at a position. Positional Training is important because it is a fundamental building block of the team as a unit.

Team Practices: The Team Practice is the format we are all familiar with. It works primarily on getting a team on the same page, and developing a good work ethic and a highly competitive attitude. Team Practices generally focus on:

  • Warm ups
  • Stick work
  • Competition (3v2, 4v3, 6v6, Numbers, etc.)
  • Situational Drills (Man Up & Man Down, clearing, 2 minutes left in game, etc.)

Pick-Up Games - Beach & Field: The best way to explain the intent behind pick-up games is to let Jamie Munro do it. Munro is one of the founders of 3d and he was head coach at Denver University. He publishes a regular newsletter and the latest edition had the following segment titled: The Power of Free Play.

“I often write about my belief in the Sandlot model of development. Last fall in lieu of fall club lacrosse, we played a weekly pick up game of street lacrosse, and it was amazing. We invited boys and girls, we had DI commits and middle schoolers mixed in the pure joy of playing lacrosse. I had coached a couple of the DI commits in HS and they say unequivocally last fall was HUGE for their development, yet they were playing with girls and old guys like me.”

We will be scheduling pickup games throughout the season. Locations will be a box rink, on the beach or on the field when we get the space.

Speed & Agility: A little bit of this is done every time we hit the field. But our goal this Winter is to create more of a sense of urgency in regards to this type of training. Size, speed and strength all matter once a player enters high school. Speed & Agility are a big part of getting ready for that environment. We will integrate as much Speed & Agility into our session as possible since we now have a certified in-house instructor: Lyndsey Munoz. We are also working on setting up an affiliate program with a specialty gym and hope to make an announcement soon. The cost of participation in an affiliate Speed & Agility program is NOT included in the Training Membership.

TEAM TOURNAMENTS

Tournaments:

  • OC Fall Brawl, November 17 & 18 - Irvine, CA
  • War On The Shore, December 8 & 9 - Irvine, CA
  • Air Station, January 26 & 27 - Irvine, CA

The tournaments range from being moderately to highly competitive, so the intensity of the season ramps up as it goes on. You will also notice that there will most likely be no formal practices prior to Battle at the Balloon. This is pretty much how we’ve been doing SB Showdown the last few years. Some people like this approach, others don’t. We’re giving you the option to decide.

The tournament registrations are what we call “waitlist registrations.” When you register, you will automatically be placed on a waitlist. You can register but you will not be charged. We do this because the tournaments are participation dependent. And if a roster is over-subscribed, we will need to make cuts.

Air Station Registration - $185: Click HERE

Registration Deadline: Thursday, October 18th.

ADVANCED PLAYER PRE-SEASON CLINICS

The philosophy behind these clinics is to give committed players with proven skills a chance to work in a hands on environment with coaches. This is not a positional clinic. We will be teaching youth players the basic skill-set needed to make them well-rounded players and allow them to learn about and explore other positions. For example, when we focus on shooting, defensemen need to shoot, just like offensive players. When we focus on defensive footwork, it is for all positions. Each session ends with a freestyle scrimmage format, similar to a pick-up game. The basic clinic structure is:

  • Warm Up
  • Speed & Agility
  • Stick Work
  • Focus Point
  • Freestyle

The clinic registrations are what we call “waitlist registrations.” When you register, you will automatically be placed on a waitlist. You can register but you will not be charged. We do this to ensure player compatibility. We can only accept advanced players into this program. Details:

  • Location: Penmar Rec Center Field 5

  • Class size: 20 total players
  • Total Sessions: 6

  • Time: TBD
  • Class size: 20 total players

What Does It Mean To Be On A Travel Team?

Being on a travel team is a BIG commitment. Please do not forget that. This is not something you do on the side. And it is not something you squeeze in between a bunch of other activities. You need to be prepared to make lacrosse a priority during the winter season. Your son will have a practice 1-2 times a week, depending on the month and play in 4 tournaments. Your coaches will expect your son to be on the field for all practices and games. That is a lot of lacrosse. You need to make sure that you can commit the time to make this work.

What Does It Mean To Play For Dragons?

Dragons is an organization dedicated to training, developing and empowering kids on and off the field. We started in 2012, and some of our players have been with us for 5 years now. The change we’ve seen in them as athletes and people is tremendous. We know our players and we believe in them. And we teach what it means to be a good teammate. The sport of lacrosse has a lot to give and we cover it all.

What Is Our Model?

We are local! We pride ourselves on being part of the community, yet still developing players to compete at the highest level. We are not a regional mega-team that draws from a 100-mile radius. 90% of our players come from less than 5 miles away. Our basic philosophy is to build solid teams and to keep them together. This allows players to develop as a unit but also as individuals. Kids develop at different speeds. Some come out of the gate strong, then have a hard time in middle school until they find their stride again in high school. Others seem to always be a bit behind, and were it not for one special quality, would probably not be on a higher level team. But then they accelerate late in middle school and just blow you away in high school. It is a most amazing process. But it is a process, and we believe it is one that works best by giving kids the time they need to develop.

What Success Have We Had With Our Approach?

Our dedication to training and development has led to a lot of success on the field. Since 2012 we’ve won over 35 league and tournament championships, and our teams have won every major winter tournament on the West Coast. Our approach works and we look forward to having you as part of our family.
