2018 Dragons Boys Countdown To Spring

Although it may not seem like it, Spring season is nearly upon us. Some of you are still in travel season and many are playing in the WLA Winter League. But the transition from winter to spring occurs very quickly so we want to make sure to get information out in a timely fashion. We have also received quite a few inquiries from new families that are eager to receive details on the logistics for the season.

Philosophy - Spring is our primary training season. We will have space at Santa Monica HS, John Adams Middle School and our beaches, and will provide each team with 2 practices a week. Spring is our longest season and provides the best platform for players to improve because of the consistent practice schedule. This year we will be asking all families to sign a player/parent contract that outlines practice and game attendance requirements. We can only get better if we are on the field together.

Tryouts - There are no tryouts for the Spring season. Everyone plays and we will have teams for all skill levels.

Team Structure - We plan on fielding teams in the age groups listed below. Our coaching staff will sit down in the next 2 weeks to draft teams that will give our players the most playing time and the best development environment.

  • 2/3 (1 or 2 teams)
  • 4/5 (2 teams)
  • 6/7 (2 or 3 teams)
  • 7/8 (1 pure 8th grade team and possibly a second 7/8 combo team)

If you are a middle school player in grades 6, 7 or 8, we do suggest you register quickly because we tend to fill up at that level. At this point we do not have a specific limit on team size, but our goal is 16-18 players to maximize playing time. For example, if exactly 36 players register in 6th and 7th grade, we will form 2 teams. If we end up with 42 players (just as an example), we would put the last 6 players to register on a waitlist and offer them a spot if one of the first 36 to register drops out. So it is better to register and pay quickly. We do need to have payment in order to secure a spot since past history has shown that people drop out after registering.

Practice Schedule - Each team will have 2 practices a week. Specific time practice times have not yet been created and we won’t be able to do so until we have a better idea what our final team structure will be. For planning purposes, our practice time slots are Wednesday 7-9pm @John Adams Middle School, Friday 7-9pm @Santa Monica HS, Saturday noon-5pm @Santa Monica HS, as well as one beach practice day.

First practice day is 2/28.

Game Schedule - We are playing in the LA Youth Lacrosse League (LAYLL). Games are every Sunday starting March 11 and ending May 20. No games on Easter Sunday. A game schedule has not yet been posted, but as a general rule, younger teams play earlier and older teams play later. Games will be played mostly at Santa Monica HS, Campus El Segundo and Culver City HS. Below is a list of the game days:

Coaching Assignments - As you know, coaches play a very, very big part in a player’s growth and development. With 14 youth coaches, we have the largest and most experienced professional coaching staff in LA. We are in the process of updating our coaches page on the website so you can read everyone’s bio. Specific coaching assignments will be made in about 2 weeks when we have a better idea of our team structure. We always try to find the best-possible fit between coaches and teams when we make assignments, and we try to maintain consistency so the players are used to familiar faces.

We will be continuing the Big Brother program we started last year for this year’s 2/3 and 4/5 recreational teams. Big Brother allows select 8th graders to work with younger players to mentor them and to pass on lacrosse skills, and earn community service hours in exchange. Many of our 8th graders play at a high level and have an amazingly deep understanding of the game. And they are enthusiastic to share their knowledge. The Big Brother program will give the younger and newer players more individual attention, and it will teach our older players how to give back to the next generation of Dragons.

To read bios on our coaches, please visit our WEBSITE. Not all the coaches bios have been posted yet.

Uniforms - We are in the process of switching to a new look for Spring/Summer 2018. Our Winter Local teams already have the new uniforms. If you are on a travel team or new to Dragons, you will need to purchase the new uniform. A separate e-mail will go out later this week regarding uniforms.

Loaner Gear - We are continuing our free loaner gear program for the Spring 2018 season. If you need to borrow gear, please contact   by 2/28. We will ask for a $100 deposit check that we return when you no longer need the gear.
