WELCOME TO THE 2018 BOX SEASON!

Box Lacrosse is booming! It is one of the most highly regarded training tools and has put many players on the college recruiting path. Box leagues and tournaments are springing up all over the place and at almost all times of the year now. Dragons Lacrosse had one of the longest running and most successful box programs in LA and we are going to continue to be a leader in 2018. Dragons have been playing box since 2012 and last season we won 3 out of 5 divisions in the OCBLL!

Box is one of the building blocks of our year-around training program. It really reenforces stick skills, playing in tight spaces, picks, the two-man game, as well as defensive skills such as playing body defense. And it is great conditioning. Below are links to articles that explain the benefits and advantages of box lacrosse:

The League

This year we’ll once again be in the Orange County Box Lacrosse League (OCBLL) competing against top talent from some of the best schools and clubs in LA and OC, including but not limited to: Foothill, St. Margarets, Corona Del Mar, San Clemente, Santa Margarita, Servite, Edison, Mater Dei, Crush, Victory, OC Rebels, Surf Dawgs, One More, Beach Cities, Navigators, SC Sharks.

The OCBLL is expanding to 4 divisions, each based out of its own rink. We will be in the “North” division based at The Rinks at Huntington Beach. That means games are moving closer to home this year. The Rinks at Huntington Beach is about 20-25 minutes closer than The Rinks at Irvine (site for many youth games last year) and about 30-40 minutes closer than the Victory Athletic Center in San Juan Capistrano, which is where most HS and JV games were played. We will still be playing games at other locations in order to make sure that we have good competition, and the championships may be consolidated at one location, similar to last year.

OCBLL is the largest and most competitive box league in Southern California and this year it will start to use rules and formats designed by USBOXLA, the leading box sanctioning body on the West Coast.

The Schedule

Practices will start the week of August 20th. The first game weekend is September 8th and 9th and the championships are October 20/21.

Details on the exact game weekends, as well as the practice slots will be passed on as soon as we receive additional information. We expect practice times to be similar to last year.

Divisions & Teams

USBOXLA is becoming the standard for setting box rules and this year the OCBLL is adopting their age rules as well. This means we’ll have teams in the following divisions:

  • HS Elite (00/01) - Seniors and Juniors
  • Midget (02/03) - Sophomores and Freshmen
  • Bantam (04/05) - 7th and 8th grade - no current freshmen
  • Peewee (06/07) - 5th and 6th grade
  • Novice (08/09) - 3rd and 4th grade

We will be entering teams each division. Teams will be limited to 12-14 players. Once the spots are filled players can continue to register but will be waitlisted. If we get 24 players in a division, we’ll move all players off the waitlist and form a second team. Players will be invited directly to participate in the box program and invitations will start going out Monday, 7/23. Participants will have 1 week to claim their spot.

Uniforms

Our box jerseys from last season were a big hit so we will continue to use them. If you have a jersey from last year, you can continue to use it and save yourself the uniform fee. If you wish to purchase a new jersey or are a new player, you’ll need to purchase by August 10th so we can get our order in. Orders placed by the deadline will receive the player name on the back. Orders placed after the deadline will receive a generic jersey with no name. We will accommodate jersey number requests as much as possible.

Thank you much for your patience as we worked to put together the box practice schedule. Our rink space is confirmed and the times are listed below. The final practice schedule will be entered into our online master schedule prior to the start of the season. Please let us know if you have questions.

A few notes on box practice:

  • All players need to be dressed and ready 5 minutes prior to the start of practice so we can start on time
  • Box is played on a roller hockey rink, so please wear sneakers, not cleats
  • We highly recommend that players wear rib pads for box. If you are unfamiliar with rib pads, a screen shot of the google search result for “rib pads lacrosse” is included at the bottom of this e-mail.

Schedule:

  • Wednesday: 5-6:30pm - 8/22 start date
